Good Standard Tex-Mex

Atmosphere--good, sparse, very strip-mall-ish. Chips--good, thin. Salsa--good, pretty hot. Not too many lunch specials to choose from. I settled on the non-lunch-special Mexican Platter because I wanted to sample both the enchiladas and the crispy tacos. I substituted an enchilada for the tamale, so got two enchiladas, taco, rice and beans for $7.99. The place ain't cheap. And of course I had to request the usual side of chopped onion and jalapeños. The food was good standard tex-mex--chili gravy was thick and ample, enchiladas were made with the usual velveeta-y stuff (thumbs up!) and the rice and beans were servicable. The crispy taco was enormous, and as anyone who has heard of Amaya's knows, the shells are fried to order, which makes a huge difference. I found myself finishing the taco, in spite of my engorged belly, just to wolf down the last of the hecho a mano shell.

The only disappointment came with the bill. Yet another tex-mex restaurant charging for a side of jalapeños. What's the deal with that! It's criminal! These were 29 cents, which is cheaper than the other places that have charged me, but it's still unacceptable. The onions were free at least (not true at the other joints).

So, worthy of a return visit.

Amaya's is fantastic. Good tacos- a little on the unhealthy side, but that's probably what makes it so tasty. If you read any of the other reviews on here, keep in mind that Mexican food can be very subjective, so everyone is going to have their own preferences and favorites. Personally, I like Amaya's and will keep coming back to it.

Lousy Management

Our office orders tacos from Amaya's every Friday for the past 2 years. Sometimes they forget some to add some items in the tacos no big deal. But this has happen for the past 3 weeks. I had it today ... decided to call and let them know ... the persons taking the orders know me by my name. So then the management gets on the phone ... she said that why they have signs to check orders before leaving. I mention that I have seen the signs ... she wants the clients to take every taco out and check them at the counter. Now grant you we order between $20.00 - $30.00 every week. She said if that what it takes ... then thats what we need to do. From her attitude and condescending tone of voice ... I don't think my company will be ordering tacos from there anymore.

Mr Amaya, What happened?

Mr. Amaya, What happened? I've been dining with you and your families since you were on Berkman Drive. I patronized your Bastrop location while it was open, as well as your Oak Hill location while it was open. After dining with you 3 or 4 times a month, many times more than that, my love affair with Amaya's has come to an end. I visited your new location on Reinli and I35 this morning. Turns out it was only a visit as we left without ever being seated. We were offered seats at the bar, but a big guy like me doesn't perch like a tweety bird. We agreed to wait for a table and were given a pager. After 3 (THREE) parties who entered and were seated, 2 without even signing in, just greeted and walked to a table we left. Your hostess is not very hospitable. Instead we went and spent our $$$ with a competitor. I called from the car to speak to a manager. After holding for 12+ minutes I finally spoke to a girl who said she was in charge today. From her attitude and condescending tone of voice I can understand why the help is acting the way they do to your customers. They have a lousy example to follow. So this afternoon I'm spending my time posting this review on as many sites as I can find. If you don't want your customers, I will do all in my power to save them a bad experience and send them to your competitors. Too bad, you've always had the best food and good help. I guess you just let it get away from you. Hope you find the resources to address and correct the problems that are destroying your good name.

Crispy Chicken Tacos are unsurpassed

I try to eat at Amaya's at least once each year, and because I can't get there more often than that I usually order the chicken tacos because no one else can do it like they do. The shredded chicken is so tender, the corn tortillas are perfectly fried and puffy, and the cheese they put on the tacos is sublime. The rice is always perfectly cooked. I remember this place from its East 7th location, and it deserves a better location than Capital Plaza.

This place is great! I was in town and I decided to go get some breakfast before I left. I was so satisfied with the breakfast tacos me and my family recieved. And not to mention the very cute waiter I had he looked maybe 18. My family and I will definitely be making a trip back there and hoping for the same waiter. :)

Their crunchy beef tacos are really good - the tortillas are freshly fried and the slightest bit chewy which I adore. Swift service...

We've been going to Amaya's for at least 20 years. Best Mexican restaurant in Austin.

The best Tex-Mex in town. The tacos and enchiladas are out of this world. A little pricer than I would have liked, but you never leave the place hungry. The only critism I have is they need to stay open longer.

My wife ordered the chicken tacos and I can't remember what I ordered because it does not matter, we left the joint!
My wife’s tacos had something that was not defiantly chicken, I don't really know what it was, we asked the waiter to take a look and ask him if the chicken was fresh and he told us, yes we made it last night????? What the hell? The tacos were runny and the rice was dry. My wife does not like beans so she told the waiter, "NO BEANS" please, and of course they brought beans all over the rice. Never again!

Paid to have a TERRIBLE experience

I will NEVER go to this restaurant again. I paid to not eat, have the owner come to my table talk to me and get NOTHING solved. A waiter by the name of George must be related to the owners. My family, friends and co workers have eaten there for YEARS.

They have a special listed and evidently, it was or was not changed this month. I was not aware of it. The owner and the waiter did not seem to care one way or the other as to what was going on. I created the sceen so they say. I guess i was suppose to eat and be quiet, eat what they put on the table even though it was not cooked they was I ask.

I ended up paying, not tasting the food, calling the restaurant, talking to the owner and having Laura say "i'm sorry for the mix up on your order but Geroge says you did not tell him cheese. I guess nowadays the customer is ALWAYS wrong? Not the place for me.

I Know What Mexican Food Is Supposed To Taste Like

I'm mexican and I know what mexican food is supposed to taste like. This was the worst mexican restaurant I have ever been to in my life and I am not exaggerating one bit. I ordered a two taco plate with rice and beans and a fajita taco on the side. My wife ordered the same but without the fajita taco and my 2 year old got a chicken quesadilla.
My first taco was good but the second taco had a whole different type of meat in there (mystery meat) and the fajita meat in my side taco was too chewy and cold. My wife had the same problem where her second taco had a different type of meat as well. They also tried to pass off mayonnaise as sour cream. That's right, you heard me, they put mayo in her tacos!!! My sons chicken quesadilla had a dark long stringy meat in his quesadilla. We told the waiter that we had ordered a chicken quesadilla and she told us that it was chicken, dark meat chicken. For one, you don't use dark meat in a chicken quesadilla and Two it was not dark meat chicken. It was more like barbacoa meat. We stopped eating and demanded 50% off the bill. Bottom line is this restaurant cuts way too many corners to save a dime but you don't have to take my word for it. Go waste your money and find out for themselves.

Amazing.

I love Mexican/TexMex food, and Amaya's is probabaly my favorite place to go when I want something of the sort. The staff is very welcoming, and if you go there enough (as do I), will quickly become familiar with you. Everytime I go, I get my usual: Crispy taco plate with rice and beans, with shredded chicken and EXTRA cheese. Yes, it's something about the cheese that is used at Amaya's that makes my day. :) I absolutely love it there. They have amazing quesadillas too, which I also perfer with shredded chicken. Their salsa is to DIE for, if you're a fan of spicy food.

Yum!!

I love Amaya's. I've been eating here since I was young and actually worked there for a little while when I was in high school. Definitely try the Puffy Tacos with beef! You can get a taco plate that comes with rice and beans -- very delicious! I don't care for their queso, but the chips and salsa are tasty. I feel like the puffy tacos USED to be much better in past years, but maybe it's just me. I like to order the deluxe dinner and get 2 enchiladas (no upcharge) instead of the tamale, get the hot plate to go, and eat the chalupa (add beef makes it very yummy) and taco at the restaurant. If you are a light eater like me, it makes for 2 decent sized meals for about 9 bucks. They give you the tin to-go boxes that heat up in the oven perfectly!

They also have a very good breakfast, and my favorite are their breakfast tacos (which you can build your own).

Flautas are a little greasy for me, but are PACKED full of meat (at least the time I ordered them).

I definitely recommend this place, much better than would be expected for a strip-mall tex mex restaurant

Here's how folk new to Austin can save a lot of time figuring out whether a Mexican restaurant is really good or just another attempt for a local dive. Check out the atmosphere and clientele. I'm convinced that Amayas attracts the locals who know good food because 1) it's not a poorly lit place (so you can actually see what you're putting into your system); 2) the food is ALWAYS fresh; 3) people take their co-workers, children AND their grandmas. Amayas is especially good for breakfast and lunch as the prices are affordable and competitive.

I love Amaya's. I have been going there since i was 6 and now I'm 14. The salsa has just the right amount of kick, and the queso is smooth and creamy. The tacos are enormous, which means you get your moneys worth. The enchiladas are always good, made fresh to order, not like other tex-mex ripoffs. The rice is always soft and flavorful. The beans are always fresh, hot, ( and are even better mixed with the rice ). For the quality and quantity of food you get, the price is amazing. I usually only get taco's or enchiladas, but i've tried everything on the menu at least once, and everything is good.

If there was a +4 (badass), Amaya's would definately get it from me!!
