About Moonies Burger House

Generously sized burgers on homemade buns. Nothing but burgers here (but you can get chicken burgers).

Hefty burgers

Reviewer: Chris

Original Review Date: 04/11/2008

Rating: +1/+3(Not bad)

I was teetering between a "Not Bad" and "Goooood" rating for Moonies. Decided to bump them up. They would get an even bigger bump if they would fire up that grill behind the counter and slap the burgers on there. Instead, we have yet another griddle-loving Central Texas burger joint. With that said, the burger was not bad, but was a tad dry. Pretty big burger (no thin patty here), several cheese options, including my standard, cheddar, and the fries are interesting. So all that adds up to a rating bump for me. But it ain't cheap. $8.65 for a cheeseburger, fries and a drink. Admittedly, the drink comes in a Big Gulp size tanker, but it costs as much as the fries, and with free refills, no need for a cup that grande.

The online reviews I've seen all mentioned the bun. It seemed to be a favorite, with a "sweet" taste. I would have to agree. The bun did have a bit of a sweetness to it, and was quite good with their burger I thought. And the fries, labeled as "Crispy Fries" on the menu, live up to that moniker. They were crispy on the outside, and stayed crisp through the entire meal. They seemed to be coated with some kind of magical Sta-Krisp coating. Not like the Hyde Park fry, which has a heavy breading, but more like a thin coating that formed a thin crispy shell around the fry. Whatever it was, it worked well.

I'm considering writing to the proprietors to beg them to use the grill for burger cooking. They have a grill back there, but it was being used to keep pans and things hot it looked like, not for cooking. I think if they were to grill those fat pattys, they would be hard to beat.

Update: Since this review, moonies has opened an Austin location. My experience there was less favorable than my 2008 trip to the Cedar Park location. I've downgraded them to a "Not bad" rating based on the recent visit to the new location—burger too round, too dry (see picture here), fries nothing special (in spite of the crispy coating).

If there's one thing you can say about Moonie's, it's that you either love it or hate it. I think the burgers are delicious- their BBQ burger is outstanding. I can't figure out why others aren't impressed. Just to be clear- this isn't a P Terry's burger. At Moonie's, the burgers are pretty hefty so take that into consideration when buying. Also, be sure to try their sweet potato fries- some of the best I've had in Austin.

the meat had no flavor. If it wasn't for the vegetables and the bread the burger would have had no taste at all.
Fries were good...

Well, the Cedar Park location is a bit too much of a drive for me, but once they opened an outlet closer in (Anderson Mill), I decided to give them a try. I've been in twice, and while the first time I thought it was an OK burger, but the second time there was something definetly OFF about it. It tasted too sweet, like they had used too much butter when they toasted the bun, or somehow coated it in simple syrup. The sweetness was so distracting that I couldn't finish the burger, and after spending close to 10 bucks on it, I can't justify going back for it.
Now if I'm hungry for just some fries or maybe a snow cone in February, I'll reconsider. But I won't be getting the burger......

Great Burger

Great burger and fries are top notch. Very good crushed ice to go in the big cup they give yu. Hit this place after minor surgery and hadn't eaten in some time. I was starving and this his the spot.

Bun was fresh, gourmet compared to other places, nice thick burger and the fries were great too. Will go back again next chance I get.

A group of us girls had a blast at Moonies on Thursday night. We all met there and they had a live country band - sthat was alot of fun listening to them. Then it was on to the food. The hamburgers were exceptional. The meat had great seasoning and taste, veggies were plentiful and fresh and the bun put the burger "over the top". Both the french fries and sweet potato fries were also great. Our entire group of 8 had the best time and all of us loved our meal. We were able to pull 2 large table together so we had plenty of room to relax and enjoy our selves. It was very nice.

The burgers are ok, not too greasy or dry, but I didn't notice anything special about the buns or fries. The place is also a little bare, no flair on the walls. Although it's an order and pick-up at the counter, there were a couple of wait staff going around to see if we needed drink refills or anything else. Overall, an ok neighborhood restaurant, but not on my regular list.

It's the bun, not the burger!

Okay, I know most of the other reviews would not support my opinion that the burgers are gross, but it's true. For the life of me, I can not figure out why most people think these burgers are good. My husband and I, based on all the good reviews, tried Moonies for the third time the other night. And our opinion was the same as it was the last time we ate there several months ago. THE BURGERS ARE GROSS. I think what people are responding to are the Hawaiian-roll-style, sweet burger buns. I've never developed this love of overpoweringly sugary things myself, but it appears to be a Southern thing. Think Krispy Kreme and Dr. Pepper! Anyway, back to the burgers. There's the super sugary roll, first off. This is a problem, since you can't really taste anything else. Some people describe these burgers as juicy. But as one other reviewer pointed out, they're not, they're dry. Note: Juicy is not the same as GREASY. And trust me, these burgers are downright greasy. They drip grease everywhere. You'll feel like you need a bath after eating one. The meat is dry and tasteless. Any Moonies lover reading this, I urge you to try something during your next visit. Take a piece of the patty and put it in your mouth with nothing else on it. You'll see what I'm talking about. Flavorless, dry, boring. The french fries, while good, are nothing out of the ordinary. They are your standard, frozen, crispy coated fry. In my opinion, all the good reviews boil down to one thing, love of the bun, not the actual burger.

"Best Hamburger"

I think Moonies has the best burger around. We love to go there ( the kids, myself and my husband). It provides us a nice family atmosphere and for some reason my kids love to go there. It may be the free snowcone that comes with their meal..??? The food has always been yummy ...I always get the avacado burger with bacon because the flavors are so good. As I was reading the paper I saw that Moonies was voted as having the best hamburger and french fries in Cedar Park / Leander so a lot of others agree with me that this place is good. They are a locally owned company which I also prefer to support. Give them a try I think you will like it.

Best in SanAntonio / Austin

We live in San Antonio and come to Austin often. We have a lot of burger places including Chesters, Chris madrids, BIGZ etc. and Moonies tops them all. Although a "flame Kissed" burger creates a unique tastes it is also usually very dry. I am really impresed with the flavor of the meat and the bun IS very Tasty at Moonies. I tried the sweet potato fries for the first time and they were a pleasant surprise. I would suggest you try them for a really nice treat. My husband had those crisp fries and they too were very good. You get good food, a lot of food and all at a very competitive / reasonable price. Try it you will like it !

I just think this place is great. The atmosphere is very pleasant, the food is great and my kids love it. The meal is very big, I always leave full. The choices of burgers is very good also. I have tried at least 5 burgers and have loved them all.....always hot, fresh and the fries ARE really really good. I suggest this place to everyone and no one has been mad at me for the reccomendation. Its just a nice place with fantastic food. Go early it is usually busy during the peak hours.
